What are the thermal requirements for an existing home for an 100% Rural Development Loan? Rural Development Loans offered by the USDA require minimum thermal standards for a 100% Rural Development Loan to be used on an existing dwelling.  An inspection will be preformed by the lender to certify that the home meets the following minimum thermal requirements:

1.  Attic insulation must be R-38 or greeter for flat ceilings.  If the house has a vaulted ceiling     with 2X6 rafters a minimum of R-19 is required.  There are exceptions for some counties.  Call a First Mortgage Office located near you  for details.

2.  The box sills of the home  (crawl space perimeter) require an R-19 or greater.  Requirements vary for finished living below ground areas or if the floor is insulated.  Call a First Mortgage Office located near you for details.

3.Windows must be at least double-glazed (insulated), or single pane glass with storm windows.

4.  Exterior doors must be solid core wood with storm doors applied, or steel insulated.
